ISAPP convened its 8th meeting in Barcelona Spain August 28-30, 2010. This meeting followed our typical format of a small, by-invitation meeting, limited to about 100 academic specialists and industry representatives from the ISAPP Industry Advisory Committee. This format, although limiting the number of participants, allows ISAPP to develop focused discussions designed to make recommendations. Please see the meeting summary. ISAPP Students and Fellows Association (SFA) The SFA awarded 8 travel grants to provide support to fellows and students that had the opportunity to attend the 8th annual meeting of ISAPP in Barcelona, Spain. During the meeting, the SFA also organized a poster session, a career opportunity session and a number of networking activities at the beach in Barcelona. In September, a new Executive Committee was elected under the leadership of Tyler Cullender, Cornell University. The SFA was founded less than a year ago, but it is already represented by 68 members from 20 countries throughout North & South America, Europe, Africa and Asia. The new Executive Committee is actively planning for 2010-2011 activities, which include training grants and a SFA prize. See http://isapp-sfa.camp7.org for information about recent or upcoming activities, and how to join the SFA. We also welcome information from the IAC members and scientists about upcoming conferences, training and career opportunities for SFA members at sfa.isapp@gmail.com. EFSA agrees that yogurt with live cultures can improve lactose digestion. On October 19, 2010, the NDA committee of EFSA published a scientific opinion that a causal relationship exists between the consumption of live yoghurt cultures in yoghurt and improved lactose digestion in individuals with lactose maldigestion. In order to bear the claim, the yoghurt should contain at least 108 cfu per serving live starter microorganisms (Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. bulgaricus and Streptococcus thermophilus). http://www.efsa.europa.eu/en/scdocs/scdoc/1763.htm EFSA report on microbes and respiratory sensitization European Food Safety Authority published a scientific report titled "Bibliographic review on the potential of microorganisms, microbial products and enzymes to induce respiratory sensitization." Call for Implementation of Change in Practice Guidelines for Probiotics and NEC.
Following the publication of an updated meta-analysis on probiotics and prevention
of necrotizing enterocolitis in preterm infants1, Tarnow-Mordi et al2
suggest that incorporating probiotics into standard practice could prevent tens
of thousands of deaths annually. The Deshpande et al.1 analysis indicated
that probiotic lowered the risk for NEC and death with no concomitant increased
risk for sepsis or significant adverse effects. However, Sol3 cautions
that additional studies (some of which may be ongoing) are needed to clarify the
specific probiotic strain and dosage and to assess effects in important subgroups
of infants, including those who are breastfed.

Spring 2010 Greetings from the ISAPP Board of Directors
Read more Thank you for expressing an interest in activities of the International Scientific Association for Probiotics and Prebiotics (ISAPP). ISAPP - incorporated in 2002 - has been growing and evolving over the past few years. We are now supported by 24 research-based probiotic/prebiotic companies, have hosted 8 meetings in Europe or North America, have supported satellite meetings in various other regions around the world, have published consumer guidelines for probiotics and prebiotics (available at isapp.net) and have otherwise worked to spread the word about the science behind probiotics and prebiotics. Because the majority of our meetings are small, topical, by-invitation meetings, ISAPP has struggled with how best to engage the many scientists worldwide interested in this field. This email is an attempt to provide information to those who have attended past meetings or who have indicated an interest in joining the ISAPP mailing list from our website. We plan to periodically send out email alerts on items we feel would be of interest to you. Also, keep an eye on the "Latest News" section on the ISAPP homepage (www.isapp.net). Events of note: Free Webinar Series on Probiotics and Prebiotics has been developed in collaboration with the International Life Sciences Institute (ILSI) North America, the American Gastroenterological Association and ISAPP.
